You’re reading a Tokyo Game Show 2008 preview, which we’ve broken into three sections to make it easy to sift through during this week of convention madness. Check out TGS.1UP.COM for all (meaning words, screens, and videos) of our coverage from the show.
What’s the game about? It’s the next iteration of Capcom’s dominant-in-Japan Monster Hunter series, which has been a mild success on PS2, and a paradigm-shifting super-Jupiter behemoth from space on Sony’s PSP. With Monster Hunter crossing over into the celebrity stratosphere in Japan, where pop stars are seen playing “MonHun” on TV, it was a big shock when Capcom announced their next episode would first appear on Nintendo’s still-nearly-impossible-to-get Wii console. While there have only been two true iterations of the series thus far, we feel like we’ve played them a million times thanks to the PSP ports and expansions featuring largerly the same content with mild additions to the formula.
What’s new for Tokyo Game Show? We got to play it! Featuring the expect motion controls that do away with that lame ol’ “button pressing” that made the PSP games so fun, Tri attempts to recapture the original “sword swinging” sensation the dev team was going for back on the PS2, in which you were required to tickle an analog stick in the hopes of simulating what it must be like to lunge with a heavy piece of metal. While the effort on PS2 was more annoying than necessary, on Wii it makes a bit more sense. That said, it still doesn’t stop me from frantically wagging my Wiimote around while my on-screen avatar laboriously heaves his broadsword to and fro, attempting to knock down the limber dinosaurs that are eagerly attempting to raptorize me.
